Abstract

Around 1.3 million people are killed in road traffic crashes every year. An additional 20 to 50 million people suffer from non-fatal injuries, which in many cases lead to disability. Road traffic injuries cause significant economic damage to individuals, their families and countries in general. This damage is due to the cost of treatment and loss of productivity due to death or injury, as well as disengagement from work or education of relatives who must take care of the victims. The damage that most countries suffer from road traffic accidents amounts to 3% of their gross domestic product.
